STARTALK Summer Arabic Language Camp for High School Students

Arabic Mosque

StarTalk Arabic Language Camps (We may hold shorter camps during one of these time periods—let us know if this would be better for you!)

June 21–July 14, 2010 Confirmed
July 19–August 11, 2010 Confirmed

We have received word that we have been selected to be funded to offer a 2010 BYU Summer Arabic camp, but we cannot accept registrations until this is official. Please watch this website for updates and possible changes. The following information is our plan, but this could change—depending on funding.

Our plan is to again offer two sessions: Monday, 21 June–Wednesday, 14 July or Monday, 19 July–Wednesday, 11 August. Both sessions will offer two tracks: a fast-track option will allow approximately twelve experienced or gifted language learners to complete the equivalent of BYU’s Arabic 101 course and receive four university credit hours for their efforts; a parallel but more moderately–paced track will allow another group of approximately twelve students to complete the equivalent of a rigorous year of high school Arabic and receive the corresponding credit.

Tuition: TBA (tuition in 2009 was $800 plus textbooks; several students received scholarships.)

Scholarships: Available for qualified students based on need.

Why Learn Arabic?

  • It’s Useful. Arabic is the fifth or sixth most widely spoken language in the world, yet few Americans know it.
  • It’s Fun. As an active learner you’ll soon be talking and experiencing Arab culture. StarTalk will expand your worldview.
  • It’s Impressive. You think people who can speak and understand Arabic are pretty smart, don’t you? When you learn Arabic you’ll find your friends and others (like employers) will think so, too.
  • It’s Growing. National and state governments support Arabic language programs.

Activities Include:

  1. Daily outdoor recreational activities centered around the language
  2. Daily cultural activities that feature Middle Eastern dance, art, cooking, etc.
  3. Weekly fieldtrips to Middle Eastern restaurants and mosques
  4. Weekly "celebrations" that include a Bedouin tent dinner, a Ramadan meal, etc.

Don't miss this amazing cultural experience!
