New Horizons Orchestra

The BYU New Horizons Orchestra was established in 2003 to create an opportunity for adults—and especially for senior adults—to begin study of a musical instrument. It serves as an "entry point" into instrumental music education for people who have never played before, and a "re–entry" point for those who may have been away from music making for many years. It also serves as a laboratory teaching setting for BYU music education students, and a vehicle for identifying and studying the ways music can affect family life.

The New Horizons Orchestra is sponsored by the BYU School of Music and directed by Dr. Andrew Dabczynski.

Summer 2010: May 12–July 14
Fall 2010: September 15–December 16

Adults 40 and up

Information:

• Instruction, lessons and rehearsals will be held during spring term on Wednesdays from 9:30–11:30 a.m. and during fall/winter semesters on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9:30–11:30 a.m.
• The cost for the NHO is $110 for fall and winter semesters; $55 for the spring term (fees are subject to change and are not covered by BYU benefits).
• Participants must provide their own instrument (violin, viola, cello or bass) and folding music stand.
• Required Texts:
  • String Explorer, Book 1 and Book 2 for your own instrument (Alfred Publishing Co.)
  • Fiddlers Philharmonic (blue cover – Alfred Publishing Co.)
  • Fiddlers Philharmonic Encore (red cover – Alfred Publishing Co.)
  • Optional:  A copy of Basic Fiddlers Philharmonic:  Old–Time Fiddle Tunes for your instrument (Alfred Publishing Co.)
• Other music is provided.  Participants may need to purchase additional music at a later time.
• Materials are available from most local music stores (recommended), and also from many online stores.
